Hello, family and friends.

With heavy hearts we give you the news that José Garcia Maldonado, our beloved father, passed away June 19th, in Los Angeles, California.

He is survived by his children; José (Joe) Lorenzo, Eduardo Cesar, Carmen Angelica and Michael Soltero.

Our father had two hardworking, loving parents and was the eldest of 11 children. In Ocotlan the family struggled, living in a small concrete room. The family moved to Guadalajara in the 50s for better opportunities. Shortly after the move tragedy struck when our grandfather was killed while riding his bicycle to work. This was the event that propelled our father to leave Mexico and make his way to start a new life in America.

Pop was the first Maldonado to migrate to the United States. When he arrived in L.A., in the 1960s, Pop found work on the famous Sunset Strip - working at some of the most famous clubs, restaurants and bars. His success helped encourage other family members to do the same.

Pop loved The Chivas Soccer Team, The Mexican National Team, The Dodgers, The Beatles, American rock & roll, collecting coins, cars, cooking (he made delicious Pozole) and traveling with his kids.

He was a proud bus operator for RTD (now MTA), in Los Angeles, for close to 20 years. This was the career that fulfilled him the most. He was proud of this career and was an excellent driver. He enjoyed talking with passengers and being part of the RTD family.

Our father instilled in us the love of music, traveling, and the importance of staying connected to family and friends. We will never forget all the trips to visit loved ones and all the road trips to Mexico. We miss him terribly. In the last years of his life, he was unable to go to Mexico to see family. He suffered with prostate cancer and kidney issues that left him in chronic pain.

Pop's passing was unexpected.

My siblings and I were in Mexico celebrating a family wedding when it happened. Needless to say, our entire family, his friends and neighbors are devastated.

My father was not prepared for this end-of-life event and neither are we. We have had no experience with this kind of tragedy and are now in the midst of a crash course in losing a parent.

Many have asked if they can help somehow, so we decided to start this fund. The money raised will be for cremation and memorial services.

We would like to thank everyone in advance for any amount of generosity.

Sincerely,

Carmen, Eddie and Joe.
