Last Saturday, our dear friend, Jose Spencer, had a terrible windsurfing accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Jose was windfoiling at Kanaha Beach, here on Maui. A fellow windsurfer spotted Jose floating face up and unable to move. He swam Jose to the beach and notified the lifeguards to call for an ambulance. Jose was rushed to Maui memorial, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord. The doctor explained that Jose sustained substantial damage to the spinal cord around the c4 vertebrae that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Jose is an unbelievably fit 73 year old man and a very positive person. If anyone can beat this, it's him. The doctors are saying that once Jose's condition is stable and he is out of danger, he will require intensive rehabilitation at a specialized spinal cord facility on the mainland. They also said that with his condition, he cannot fly on a commercial airline. That means having to medevac from Maui to a mainland facility, which will be very expensive.
Jose earned his living doing what he loved, as a master carpenter. Jose is the type of guy that would help out a total stranger, never expecting or accepting anything in return.
Now it's our turn to help Jose.
Jose is currently in the intensive care unit at Maui Memorial Hospital, hooked up to a breathing tube, due to an infection in his lungs caused by inhaling saltwater. He will be facing insurmountable medical bills. Please help in anyway you can. No amount is too small.
