My name is Jo, I’m 25 years old and live in Brooklyn, NY. It’s a bit strange for me to speak on something so personal on such a public platform, but after much consideration and years of working towards the goal of having top surgery as a crucial part of my personal trans experience, I’m finally ready to extend myself to my community and ask for support in achieving this goal.

 

I’ve dreamt of seeing this for myself for as long as I can remember. Those that are close to me know how life-affirming it has been for me to begin my journey medically transitioning, how taking these steps has radically changed my engagement with life in the most beautiful and sacred way. In the last couple years I have been putting away as much money as I realistically can in preparation to have this surgery as soon as possible, when the timing was right and I had the support around me that I need. I am so grateful to now have that support from all my loving friends and community members so that I can prioritize having this done in the next couple months. But between the daily costs of living, rent, etc, I can’t cover it on my own.

 

There are a lot of out of pocket costs that I’m managing right now, including doctor’s visits, my HRT prescription, therapy, etc. I’m looking to schedule surgery by the end of April or start of May 2022, and between now and then there will be a number more doctor’s visits to make sure I’m cleared for surgery, along with the cost of the procedure, hospital fees, travel/transportation, and accommodations to stay nearby the hospital for at least a week for a post-op check in before returning to New York. It’s also going to be a big adjustment to my daily life to be out of work for about 4-6 weeks post-surgery for the proper recovery time, during which I won’t have any other source of income.
