On Monday January 11th, the Barboza family lost a father, husband, brother, son, and all around amazing human being. José Barboza lost his courageous 3-year battle with cancer. José and Araceli “Cheli” Barboza have 3 beautiful children, the oldest of which, their daughter Lucy, just turned 16 in July 2020, Jason is 9, and José is turning 13 in late January.
If you knew José, or “Jebs”, as many of us knew him, you know his family meant everything to him. I regularly saw José’s posts pop up on my facebook feed, about his children’s accomplishments, milestones, and adventures. The opportunities when I had contact with him over the years, he would always have something to tell me about his kids and family, and speak with so much pride and fulfillment about them. I felt fortunate for the times we were able to get our families and friends together over the years. Seeing our kids play together felt like a fulfilled goal that I didn’t know I had so many years ago up at Humboldt State.
I knew José since 1998 when we were both students at Humboldt State University. José was a great friend to me, as he was to many others. José had a deep faith, was one of those people who wore his heart on his sleeve, and always had something to give. Many of us who knew him know that the bond he had with many of us, is immeasurable. His ability to bring people together is what made him so unique to those of us that knew him and loved him.
In this unforeseen time, I call upon those that love him, especially our HSU family, to come together and lift his family up.
I have been a beneficiary of Jose’s good will, friendship, and support over the years. I know that many of us have been as well!
