Musician needs help to play again. Facebook and a series of fortunate events saved Jorge Miller’s Life. Now we need your to help him get the treatment he needs.*(Donations in US dollars)
On April 19, 2017, Jorge Miller, a talented Flamenco guitar player, suffered an epileptic seizure in his home while he was alone. The reason why Jorge is still fighting is because a close friend felt it was unusual not to see him online on Facebook: After sending him several messages and getting no response, she knew something was off and asked someone to go check on him at his home.
Jorge was found unconscious and taken to the hospital, where doctors had to intubate him because he was not breathing properly on his own. After being stabilized, he was moved to intensive care at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition (Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición), one of the best in the nation.
Jorge remains in intensive care, showing short lapses of consciousness and repeating seizures. Unfortunately, every day Jorge remains in intensive care the bills keep adding up. The doctors have not been able to make an accurate diagnosis of his condition given that the causes that led to the seizure remain unknown. Jorge is showing signs of potential paralysis and neurological damage and he faces a challenging road towards recovery.
Jorge is a beloved Flamenco guitar player who has gained national and international recognition. He has been the director of the ensemble Embrujo Flamenco since 1990, which has focused on the study and interpretation of the Spanish repertoire that amalgamates modernity and tradition in a fresh and original way.
Jorge is loved by the musician community in Mexico City, his family, and countless friends. His sense of humor and wit spark laughter on each conversation and his music has been the soundtrack of countless family gatherings and many more special occasions through his concerts at private and public events. He is a devout guitar player, always practicing chords, rhythms, and musical arrangements. Jorge also draws and paints, and his images often accompany the music videos of his songs.

Not unlike many talented artists, and despite his many talents, Jorge has experienced financial hardships. Even though he is enrolled in the Popular Health Insurance (Seguro Popular) offered by the City of Mexico, he lacks the necessary funds to cover his increasing medical expenses (one of the medications cost $5600 Mexican pesos a day, the equivalent of 70 days of minimum wage work). Jorge is receiving the best treatment possible at one of Mexico’s leading public health centers; however, the Popular Insurance does not cover this treatment. This has resulted in a growing list of medical bills that his family needs to pay but is unable to afford.
Jorge has the support of his family and friends, but this is not enough to cover all expenses. We ask you to consider making a donation to help offset these costs and contribute to his recovery. As we await an accurate diagnosis and treatment, our family is hopeful he will regain consciousness and be moved out of intensive care. However, Jorge’s livelihood as a musician is threatened by the possible neurological damage and it seems that the road to recovery will be a long and challenging one.
Please help us take care of Jorge in this difficult time. Everyone is important to someone and he is important to us. We will be forever grateful and we promise to pay it forward. No contribution is too small and it will make a huge difference for our family, who is working together to support and care for Jorge every day. We will continue to update you on any news as we receive them and all funds will go towards his treatment and rehabilitation. Ines, Jorge’s niece, resides in Los Angeles and has offered to send the raised money to his brother and sisters to cover the treatments.
We are deeply thankful you have taken the time to read Jorge’s story and for any support you can provide us.
With eternal gratitude and appreciation,
His brother and sisters Frances, Elena, Estela, and Carlos; his nephews and nieces Guillermo, Iker, Ines, Isabel, Alejandro, Daniel, and Michelle, and the many friends and colleagues who love Jorge and wish him a soon recovery.
*Important: This campaign is run from the U.S. and is in US dollars. Also, it is not connected to the benefit concert to be held on May 4th in Mexico City. I will be withdrawing the raised funds and sending them to Mexico to his brother and sisters so that they can cover the hospital bill. Thanks again!
