Jorge Hernando Garcia's FTD Memory Fund
Donation protected
After 20 long years of battling with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), Jorge Hernando Garcia Mejia, – our beloved son, brother, husband, father, and friend - left us on October 3rd, 2020.
The disease caught him early in life – showing symptoms in his late 40’s. It was a rough road ahead. Despite the difficulties of diagnosis and care he required; the disease brought out a new side of dad. His goofiness was less censored and his singing and dancing became more frequent. The family united around his challenges and while there were moments of sadness, there were many years of laughter and happiness. It also brought us together as caregivers and loving support.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorotea Leyva and six children: Mateo, Pedro, Maria, Ana, Simón & Sofia, and two grandchildren: Samuel and Rebekah, who will always cherish him, his compassion, understanding, selflessness, humility and loving demeanor. He is also survived by his mother, Magdalena Mejia de Garcia and his siblings Magdalena, Ximena, Patricia, Claudia, Mauricio and Adriana.
As a family we hope to honor his memory by creating a fund to help other families affected by FTD in Colombia. We hope to provide a little relief through information, resources, and support for FTD caregivers; from our own experience we know how difficult every single step and phase of this horrible disease can be. We hope that our 20+ year journey, accompanyingour Dad, can bring some relief to others.
Thank you for your love and support, and we hope that together we can make light from this sadness.
PS: If you know of any loved one suffering with dementia, feel free to visit DementiaAide.com, a website with resources compiled by our family through our experience with Dad.
