Jordan's Journey after Brainstem Surgery

My name is Erin Wise. My family and I are fundraising for my little sister, Jordan Wise, and her medical bills. Jordan is a 23 year old college student at UHV majoring in English and working towards her teaching degree.

On February 10, 2024, Jordan went to the ER complaining of severe headache, dizziness, nausea, and more concerning, numbness in one side of her face. A CT scan revealed a brain bleed that was putting pressure on the brain stem. Jordan was rushed by ambulance to Memorial Hermann in Houston, TX and by the time she arrived, was unable to move the left side of her body or speak at all. She was admitted to the Neuro ICU and surgery was quickly scheduled.

February 13, 2024, Jordan's Nuero surgery team performed a 6 hour Retrosigmoid Craniotomy to remove the blood and fix what caused the bleed. When Jordan later woke up from surgery, she was intubated, and still unable to speak. She was, however, able to communicate by signing with the ASL alphabet, which she learned while in high school. She was able to move her right arm and leg, but her left side was extremely weak. 

What was removed from Jordan's brainstem was basically a tangle of blood vessels connecting the arteries and veins otherwise known as a Brainstem Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM).

Jordan has been and will continue to go through the rehabilitation program through Memorial Hermann. She has started speaking, eating pureed food, standing for minutes at a time, and has shown us all how extraordinary she truly is. We have every reason to believe she will recover fully. Recovery will be a long process but Jordan is and has alway been a determined fighter.
