My name is Jordan Bucher and I have stage three colorectal cancer.
I was diagnosed in January 2024 after having a colonoscopy exam. I’m a construction worker by trade so when I began to have back pain, I thought it was because of my job. I started seeing blood in my stool and I thought I had hemorrhoids, again I thought it was because of my job. My wife scheduled me a doctor appointment for a routine physical in January. At the appointment, I told the doctor I thought I had hemorrhoids and back pain from being a construction worker and he agreed and told me what to take for hemorrhoids. During the appointment, the doctor stated that because I turned 40, I was due a prostate exam. I had only been 40 for three months. While conducting the prostate exam, he quickly realized I didn’t have hemorrhoids. He then called a colonoscopy doctor in to examine me. He examined me and scheduled me for a colonoscopy. Immediately after the colonoscopy, while still feeling the effects of the anesthesia, I was told that a mass was found, and I was being sent straight to the hospital for a CT scan. About a week or so later, I met with the colonoscopy doctor who told me I had colorectal cancer. All I can remember from that appointment is when he told me that I had cancer and that it was located far down in my rectum which makes it difficult to treat.
When I was told I had cancer, I was in shock at first. I felt like I was going to die. Like my life was over. Everyone relates cancer to dying.
I was given Chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Monday through Friday, I had to take chemotherapy pills in the morning, be driven by my wife to Murfreesboro for radiation and then take more chemotherapy pills in the evening for 28 days. Due to the treatment schedule, pain, nausea, and weakness, my wife and I have been unable to work. My wife is my caregiver and because of this, we don't have insurance.
I have completed that regimen. I recently had another CT scan and am scheduled an appointment with the surgeon. After surgery, I will be in the hospital for several days before I can go home. After surgery, I will undergo liquid chemotherapy through a port in my shoulder/chest area for six months.
I normally would never ask anyone for help but the medical bills have already reached beyond $30,000 and I haven't had surgery or the next phase of chemotherapy. My hope is that the Tennessee community and beyond can help take some of the financial burden away from my wife and I so we can focus on recovering.
Thank you so much for any support (financial or otherwise) you are able to provide!
