Dear Family and Friends,
I am pleased to announce that upon graduating from Wesleyan University in May, I will be continuing my academic career next fall at the University of Cambridge in Cambridgeshire, England! I want to first thank God because without Him, I would not be in the position I am today. I want to thank my mother for her continued sacrifice, my family, teachers, mentors and friends for supporting me through this journey, and for loving me unconditionally.
During my 4 years at Wesleyan University, I have had some amazing opportunities and experiences. From founding the Cardinal Community Classic, a 3v3 basketball tournament to raise money for breast cancer patients at the local hospital, to mentoring at-risk high school students to help prepare them for college, to organizing a Hurricane Harvey relief effort on campus to provide clothing and in-kind goods to those affected by the storm back in my hometown Houston, Texas. While these events are not inclusive of everything I’ve been a part of, I believe it demonstrates my commitment to leaving a place, a community, and a group of people better than how I found them.
Now as a senior at Wesleyan, I am looking forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my life. At Cambridge, I would be pursuing my Masters in Psychology and Education. I am humbled and extremely excited to have been selected to attend one of the world's premier universities, which I believe will lead to beneficial connections while affording me the opportunity to interact with scholars from around the globe. My goal is to come away from this experience with a course of action to ultimately help marginalized youth - provide them with opportunities to develop and use life skills necessary to live choice-filled lives and succeed in any environment in which they are placed. In other words, have options…
Nothing of this magnitude comes without a cost and that is why I am reaching out to you. The cost of attending Cambridge is $40,000. I truly believe in “having some skin in the game” meaning that I am diligently working to offset some of the financial obligations (including loans) that come with an opportunity such as this. I have also reached out to numerous alumni from both my high school and university to explain my financial circumstances. I refuse to let money be the reason I do not attend Cambridge this fall; I am simply searching for ways to make it more affordable. My plans are to work this summer along with crowdfunding for those who wish to invest in me. And that includes reaching out to my network, including family and friends, who are interested in “paying it forward” by helping me make this opportunity a reality. After constructing a budget and factoring in the work I plan to do over the summer, I would need approximately $25,000 to attend. This includes tuition, room and board, and flights.
Thank you for listening to my story and if you know of anyone interested please share this post!
Sincerely,
Jordan
