The day our lives Changed
On March 10th, our lives were changed forever. Jordan suffered a devastating fall at work that crushed his cervical spine from C3 to C7. Miraculously it wasn’t a complete injury, which means there is still hope for recovery, but the journey ahead is long, uncertain, and deeply overwhelming – emotionally, physically, and financially.
Jordan has spent his life working hard as a dedicated truck driver, someone who built his life around showing up – for work, for his family, and for anyone who needed him. He is a loving partner, a proud father of three, and a rock-solid friend to so many.
A Long Road far from Home
After his fall, Jordan was airlifted from Victoria to Vancouver, to emergency surgery, followed by months recovering far from home. Their savings have been massively depleted during this time, as Kim put her work (at a new job) completely on hold to be there for Jordan, and has only recently returned in a limited capacity, which left her with no income during this time. Also, Kim and Jordana spent hours traveling to support Jordan during his extended stay on the mainland, which also generated additional expenses for both of them.
Jordan has been through extensive, grueling rehabilitation – re-learning how to do basic tasks we all take for granted, like breathing, feeding himself and brushing his teeth, regaining up to 75% use of his left arm, and doing it all with grit, humor and heart. However, his prognosis remains uncertain, we have been told that with extensive rehabilitation he “may” regain more function that he has right now. Currently he is at physiotherapy three days a week, with a goal to walk independently again.
What we are Facing
The majority of Jordan’s medical needs are covered by Worksafe BC, but must be paid upfront, and reimbursement can take time. Jordan and Kim’s current apartment is not accessible and will no longer meet his needs, so they need to find a new place to call home. Although Jordan has a claim through Worksafe BC claim, there are limitations on what they will pay towards housing; they will cover our move, and selected renovations and/or accessible devices as needed, but not assist with purchasing, or making payments on rent or mortgage.
The other major challenge we are facing is transportation, both to simply get us places day-to-day, and to provide freedom from the loneliness and isolation that Jordan has been experiencing. Wheelchair taxis are limited and often unavailable, which is a significant source of stress when trying to get anywhere on time. We have been using Modo car share wheelchair van, which is not always available, and costs a minimum of 100/day, overall this will not be sustainable for us. Our ultimate goal is to buy a wheelchair accessible van to help make our day-to-day lives as easy as they can be.
How you can Help
We are humbly asking for your support. Money raised will go towards a down payment for an accessible home, and towards the purchase of a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Any help towards these goals is appreciated. Writer’s note: If you know Jordan and Kim, they are two of the most selfless, wonderful people, whose world has been rocked, and are trying to adjust to their new reality.
Every donation matters. Every little bit will help Jordan and Kim rebuild their lives together.
Please forward and share.
With love, strength, and endless gratitude,
Jordan and Kim
