This is a short account of what has taken place with my family over the past 5 1/2 years. There are 6 of us that have had little more that a roof over us and a place to sleep and now that is being taken away, making us homeless. I (we) need all the help we can get.
Our home was flooded by several tropical storms. Thereafter, Mathews County passed an ordinance requiring our home to be lifted, or it would be condemned.
Through much research, I was able to identify a federal program that would provide grant money to the locality in order to lift our homes. Matthews County agreed, identified a contractor to perform the work, and the work began.
Unfortunately, the contractor was incompetent. The work was completely unacceptable, and our home is unlivable. We are embroiled in a lawsuit against the county to force it to pay for the complete repair of our home.
Although we won a substantial judgment against the contractor, the contractor is an out-of-state company without any assets. Despite the county’s reassurances and despite the terms of the contract, the contractor failed to obtain the proper insurance required by the county, and that left us with no source of funds to repair our home. We are proceeding against the county but the trial has not begun yet.
As it stands now, we have lived in a FEMA construction trailer for over five years. The house has been rendered unlivable and must be razed.
At this late date we have only 30 days to vacate the property. If you have been here you would know this is (without money that we don’t have) not possible to achieve. The house is almost empty however my shop and studio have not yet been started to pack-up.There is about 10,000 sq.ft. of space that needs to be packed stored in trailer bodies that we don't have as of yet.
As stated there are 6 of us myself and wife, my 88 Yr. Old mother,my son and wife, and my 11 yr. old granddaughter.
