Jonny Waite, accident, medical, and misc expenses

Donation protected
Jonny Waite of Safford, Arizona, was in a serious vehicle accident last night (Saturday, October 2, 2021) in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), Mexico. It occurred behind the resorts on Sandy Beach. He has a skull fracture, a brain bleed, and requires facial reconstructive surgery. The Mexican Navy airlifted him to the US. He eventualy arrived at a Phoenix hospital. Details are sparse but we will update / correct this post as information becomes available.

Positives: last night he was able to squeeze his hand to respond to people; he has been stable since 6 a.m.; and his extremities are responding to stimuli.

Negatives: he wasn't able to talk; we are only 12 hours into the unpredictability of a head injury; he requires facial reconstruction; and because of confusion we were not able to even confirm that he was in the US until 9+ hours after the accident, so information is still rolling in.

Sunday after 12 p.m., he woke and was combative, which is common when someone is confused and feeling pressure on their brain. They sedated him and are prepping him for a preliminary surgery and then surgery related to the brain bleed.

We will update this page as more information becomes available. It's too early to know what expenses he will have, but this is severe. He will have medical expenses from two countries, some of which had to be paid in advance out of his bank account to get him out of Mexico. We don't know what his US medical insurance will cover, but we know he will be unable to work for some time and we cannot predict his long-term expenses.

Jonny is the funniest and nicest person I know. Consider sharing financially on GoFundMe, and also posting to his Facebook page a story about him that is funny or how he helped someone. He has a fantastic sense of humor and will later appreciate it.

We are hesitant to thank anyone this early because we are in shock and afraid he will forget to thank some people. But we are grateful to:

- friends and stangers on the scene of the accident;

- the medical professionals in Mexico;

- the Meican Navy;

- Mesa, Arizona immigration attorney Yasser Sanchez, who used his contacts in Puerto Penasco to track down and verify my brother was transported to the US (invaluable information); and

- the mayor of Puerto Penasco and his family for verifying those details.

There are also many working on retrieving his property from Mexico and have expressed a willingness to help in other ways.
