Joni Lynn Peters epitomizes many riders’ dreams
: buy a barely started young horse, train it to the highest level of sport, qualify for the Canadian Team, and compete at the Olympics.
She’s a living example of Thoreau’s quote, ‘Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.’Joni’s horse partner - Travolta – is a Canadian success story.
She purchased Travolta as a 3 year old at the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association Auction. He was bred by John Van Den Bosch (Bosch Farms) in Alberta and is sired by Olympic Ferro. When Joni bought him, Travolta had 30 days training. She’s done all the rest. See Travolta in action Travolta isn’t the first horse Joni’s trained to the highest levels of horse sport…. but he’s the best!
Joni started her horsey life in Canadian Pony Club in northern BC, then pursued her passion for three-day eventing. A strong competitor, she was short listed for the Canadian Three-Day Event Team before switching disciplines to pursue dressage (on her former event horse!)Joni has won many dressage championships, and been long and short listed for the Canadian Eventing and Dressage Teams multiple times from 1995 onward.
She’s been fortunate to train with top coaches in France and Germany, and represent Canada in competition overseas.
Always keen to share her knowledge, Joni is a popular and talented coach for both eventing and dressage disciplines.
Now at the pinnacle of her sport, Joni has a sound, well-schooled horse, and knows how to win. She and Travolta have been competing Grand Prix for 5 years and were short-listed for the 2012 London Olympics. They are now short-listed for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
However, with the exception of some wonderful sponsors and occasional funding from organizations such as Horse Council BC, Joni’s competitive pursuits are entirely funded by her coaching. To pursue her dream, Joni and Travolta must compete throughout western Canada and the USA from January to June, 2016.
After that, the Canadian Dressage Team will be selected for the 2016 Rio Olympics in August.
Qualifying for the Olympics is expensive! Living and competition costs, fuel, and leasing a new truck will cost about $40,000. This campaign will help pay these costs, and all funds raised will go directly to Joni. Will you support Joni’s dream?
I’ve known Joni since her Pony Club days and used to compete at three day events with her. Having given up on my Olympic dreams long ago (I now ride wilderness trails in a western saddle!) this fundraiser is my way of vicariously living the dreams I won’t achieve. I hope you’ll join me.
Full disclosure: It’s quite possible that Joni and Travolta may not make the Canadian Team, but with your support, Joni will be able to pursue her lifelong dream of representing Canada at the Olympics.
