“Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”

– Joshua J. Marine

Jon and Amy Bush are a kind and simple couple who are no strangers to adversity and overcoming challenges.  They have independently found their way through life’s twists on more than one occasion.  The magnitude of their current challenge is daunting.

Jon Bush saw active duty in the United States Army from 1987 to 1991 where he was deployed to Operation Desert Storm.  As a member of the First Infantry Division, Jon was part of the unit responsible for the initial breach of the Iraqi defenses under difficult and hazardous conditions, which later lead to the overthrow of the Iraqi dictatorship.

Following a good conduct discharge, Jon worked full time and went to college until he began working for the California Department of Corrections. He worked as a Correctional Officer and Parole Agent for 19 years until he recently medically retired as a result of a MTHFR gene mutation causing chronic blood clots in his legs and lungs.  Recently, Jon was further diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.  All diseases are chronic and incurable, but treatable.

In order to continue to provide for their family, Amy began advancing her own education while working as a teacher’s aide.  She recently achieved her BA degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and completed the necessary standards and credentials to work as a teacher (her dream is to become a Special Education teacher).  She only needs to complete a 4-month student teaching assignment to make this a reality.  However, her BA and Credential program are bundled, disallowing a paid internship.  The student teaching position is unpaid, and during that time, the family will not be able to maintain their monthly obligations on only Jon’s disability payments.

Anyone who knows Jon and Amy knows that they are always there to lend a hand when it comes to helping out anyone in need.  Now let’s do our best to be there for them.
