Give Jonathan a Leg Up Medical Fund
Donation protected
This gofundme has been set up to help raise money for Jonathan Elliott. On January 10, Jonathan lost his left leg below the knee. We ask for help in raising funds that will cover the daunting costs of his medical care, get him into a prosthetic leg, and get him back on his feet, literally.
For those who don’t know his story, Jonathan spent 2016 recovering from a serious infection that took part of his right foot; we thought, in the fall, that we were in the clear. He was at a wedding when his right leg began to buckle and collapse under him. He was diagnosed with Charcot Foot, a rare condition associated with Diabetes, in which the hard tissues of the leg begin to fall apart. Jonathan's case was severe. He was immediately treated with confinement to a specialized boot and limited mobility, with a fusion surgery planned for early 2017.
Weeks before this surgery, however, Jonathan fell seriously ill. A 105 fever and signs of serious infection sent him to the emergency room, which revealed a massive bone infection in the left leg and blood-born MRSA. Two days later, on January 10, his 35th birthday, his left leg was amputated.
The last two months have been incredibly hard and also transformative and rewarding. In under two weeks in rehab, he had mastered the use of the wheelchair, learned to climb stairs with his remaining leg, and re-learned how to handle much of his life in light of this new change. He came home in mid-February, and anticipates receiving a new prosthetic leg in April, with another stint in rehab to re-learn how to walk and use this miraculous technology.
He's made it through the worst of this, and we're overjoyed he's with us. Jonathan is constantly trying to find the good in what happened to him, he's become a powerful patient advocate and storyteller in the Diabetes and amputee communities, with pieces published in The Guardian and a forthcoming series of stories on HealthCentral. But the medical expenses and costs of this life change are astronomical, even with good insurance. Bills have piled up, and many more are on the horizon. His out-of- pocket expenses are serious, and we want to help.
Your support of this campaign will:
- Help Jonathan cover his share of his hospital expenses incurred thus far
- Help Jonathan pay for his new prosthetic leg and training in its use
- Help Jonathan with continuing medical expenses, including physical therapy, home nurse care, and medication
- Help Jonathan with ADA modifications to his home, including a modified bathroom, entryways, and a ramp
- Help Jonathan remain healthy with treatments and methods not covered by insurance, including dietary management and a therapist/personal trainer specializing in work with amputees.
Every contribution is appreciated, and makes you a part of his story as he gets better and continues fighting.
This horrific event nearly killed our friend, but he survived. We're going to watch him walk, then run, then do a silly dance someday soon.
