As you may know, I am beginning my journey into medicine at CalMed (CUSM) in San Bernardino, CA, and I begin my first year (M1) July 27th, 2020. I just had a wonderful first day of orientation on 07/13/2020 and I am looking forward to excelling in my clinical education with CUSM's MD Class of 2024. My hopes are one day to become a reconstructive plastic surgeon with a practice of my own in Los Angeles, CA.
My school is one of the newest allopathic (MD) medical schools in California and I am actually the school's first Black/African American male student matriculated. and will likely be the first to get a doctorate degree from the university. This is very meaningful and important to me, and I realize that I have an opportunity to do something historic at my professional school. I believe that it is of utmost importance for there to be equitable representation for all when it comes to healthcare and I plan to devote my life to addressing current disparities. Luckily, I have found support and comfort in the CalMed faculty body, which is much more diverse and inclusive. Overall my school is amazing and is opening the doors to its new permanent state-of-the art campus facilities with the influx of my class this 2020-2021 school year.
Unfortunately, as a newly accredited institution, government provided financial aid for my school is still in the process of being implemented and becoming available for the student body. As such, the entire cost of my first year tuition ($62,200 + cost of living expenses) is up to students to cover, either via their own funds/income or through high-interest rate private loans. This is quite a hefty sum of money to come up with and I am actively exploring any options available to help meet this financial burden. I have applied for several scholarships, with one already conditionally granted and many others in the process of selection. Despite some support from my parents and my own efforts, I am coming up quite short of my tuition balance for this year.
I am doing everything I can to make my dreams of medicine come to fruition and overcome the current obstacles to my education. I am kindly asking my beloved family friends to donate to my GoFundMe and help this young man go down in history as the first Black doctor to successfully graduate from CalMed. Thank you for your consideration and generosity.
