I’m writing this on behalf of my boyfriend, Jonah, who was almost taken from us in a horrific car accident while driving home from work. This accident currently has him hospitalized and in critical condition, fighting for his life.

He is currently still intubated in the Trauma ICU and has already undergone multiple major emergency surgeries just to keep him alive. His abdominal injuries are very severe, including extensive damage to his stomach and intestines, which require emergency mitigation. Because of the swelling and the critical nature of these injuries, his stomach remains open for now, and the doctors are hopeful they can close it once he is stable enough. Unfortunately, the abdominal injuries are only one step in the series of complex procedures he still faces.

In addition to his abdominal trauma, Jonah also suffered an aortic dissection (a tear in the main artery of the body). This condition is often fatal, and he required emergency surgery to repair it. He will remain on strict medications and monitoring for months to prevent further complications.

After the abdominal surgeries are completed, Jonah will also need another invasive surgery to repair his lower spine, which is in extremely delicate condition from the impact of the accident. His vertebrae are damaged and misaligned and must be fused together with rods and screws to stabilize his spine and protect his spinal cord and nerves. Without this surgery, he risks losing the ability to walk, permanent nerve damage, and lifelong complications for basic functions. The spinal fusion will require a large incision and a highly complex procedure, followed by more time in intensive care and then months of recovery.

This is just a glimpse of what lies ahead in Jonah’s long road to healing. He faces a prolonged hospital stay, additional surgeries, and extensive rehabilitation to relearn functions many of us take for granted: how to move, walk, and regain independence. The financial burden is staggering. With no health insurance, no income during this time, and mounting medical bills, Jonah has been left to shoulder expenses that go far beyond what any one person could ever manage.
