Having a strong faith in God, Jon possessed a spiritual depth that defined him throughout his entire life. He would enter a room and you would feel that light shine through his smile and eyes. He was first to lighten a situation with a joke or provide sage wisdom to anyone seeking his advice.
Jon was a high school graduate of Uplift North Hills Preparatory and starting his first day as a sophomore at the University of North Texas at Denton. He was passionate about world history, the global political landscape and military strategy. Coupled with his talent for writing, his ultimate goal was to obtain a degree in journalism focusing on international affairs.
He was a member of Boy Scout Troops 874 and 412. Here, Jon developed his strong character and enjoyed the challenges of leadership positions during scouting campouts and high adventure camps to Philmont and Northern Tier. His dedication earned him the rank of Eagle in 2022.
Music was a central part of Jon’s life. He played piano, wrote music, and was a self-taught guitarist. He enjoyed strength training, skateboarding, gaming with friends and loved the great outdoors with his family. Jon cherished spending time with his younger brother Max, whom he loved dearly.
Jon will be missed terribly and remain in our hearts. He is remembered as a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew and beautiful soul who was intelligent, witty, compassionate, and fiercely loyal to those he loved.
He is survived by his mother Linda, his stepfather David Brooks, his brother Max, his grandparents Barbara and Lowell Carlson, his aunt and uncle Jeanie and Bret Berg, and his cousin Thomas Hamelink. He is preceded in death by his great aunt and godmother Verna Bates, and by his godfather Robert Keim.
To honor Jon’s memory and legacy, the family suggests a donation to The University of North Texas Jon Carlson Memorial Journalism Scholarship via this Go Fund Me page. All moneys raised will go to help a sophomore journalism major in need.
