Early Monday morning, December 9, Jonathon lost his long battle with mental illness.
Jonathon Goris met Paige Mussey in 2005 at James Bowie High School. They became good friends, started dating, fell in love, and were eventually blessed with their first beautiful daughter, Aubrie, in 2008.
Aubrie grew up in a loving and supportive home, with an amazing father and mother. Jon supported Aubrie throughout her development as every loving father does, always helping her with academics, sports, and encouraging her to take chances and grow. It was apparent to everyone that Aubrie had Jon wrapped around her tiny fingers.
As Aubrie grew older, she began to show a strong interest in soccer, a sport she has excelled in over time. Although Jon was continuing his education as well as working to support the family, he was always there to help Aubrie practice, give her pointers, be her number one fan on the sidelines, and pick her up and dust her off when she fell. Jon was a strong comforting figure in Aubrie’s life, and was always there to protect her.
As Aubrie grew and began giving her parents beautiful memories, Jon developed a love for capturing those memories with photography. He used this talent to capture the beautiful moments shared with him and his family, spending weekends outdoors at the Greenbelt or the soccer fields, birthdays, holidays, and much more. Jon’s beautiful pictures captured the joy and love his family had together, and the love they had for them.
In 2017, Paige and Jon welcomed their second beautiful daughter, Simone. Aubrie was overjoyed to finally be a big sister, and Jon had another daughter he could dote on. A few months later, after years of schooling, Jon graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry, and was just one course shy of majoring in Chemistry, as well. Jon was the first in his family to graduate college, and everyone was so, so proud of him. Aubrie seemed to follow in her Dad’s footsteps when she won first place in her age group at the science fair for her research project on Bacterial Biofuel. Jon found work with his new degree, and the family developed a plan for Paige to go back to school once Simone started daycare.
In May of this year, Jon began to exhibit strange and unusual behavior: quitting his job, spending large amounts of money they didn’t have on things that weren’t needed, and ranting about a secret business he was creating. After days of lost sleep and episodes that were concerning, Jon was hospitalized, where he was diagnosed with bipolar 1, a type of bipolar disorder involving depressive and manic episodes. From May to August, Jon had many cycles of manic and depressive episodes. He racked up thousands of dollars in debt while purchasing a car, electronics, and traveling across the state in pursuit of starting a new career. Jon was hospitalized multiple times, was prescribed numerous medications, and saw multiple therapists. During this time, he was also diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Jon’s family felt a huge weight off their shoulders, hoping that with a proper diagnosis, there would be proper treatment and a successful outcome. We had many moments where it seemed like Jon was back to his normal self. Sadly, people with bipolar disorder often decide once they’ve been on their medication for so long that they don’t need it. Jon had multiple episodes where he felt that he was no longer a victim of this terrible disease, and therefore felt that he no longer needed his medication. His family found out on Jon’s 30th birthday that he was no longer taking his medicine. While his mental illnesses were working against him, his unconditional love for his family kept him fighting. He fought so hard for so long for himself and his family, but ultimately, the disease took him. He is survived by his parents and siblings, along with his wife Paige, and their beautiful daughters, Aubrie (11) and Simone (2).
