I was very excited about starting a new job as Insurance Agent on March 11th, 2019.   On March 5th, I was home when I felt suddenly dizzy. A few minutes later, I had an excruciating pain shoot up my back into my head and neck.

When the EMT arrived in the ambulance, I was on the floor of the hallway, nauseous, disoriented, and in pain I would not wish on anyone.  I originally was taken to Providence Northeast, where a CT scan was done that revealed  blood in my brain! Providence was not equipped to deal with such a condition, so I was transferred to the PRISMA Hospital where the doctors immediately did an angiography (medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside, or lumen, of blood vessels and organs of the body, with particular interest in the arteries, veins, and the heart chambers).  They could not find the cause of the bleeding nor could they drain the blood from my brain.

I was admitted to the the Neuro ICU unit of the Prisma Hospital located in Columbia, SC.  The excruciating pain in my back, head and neck continued for 10 days. For days, the pain in my back was so bad, I could not lay down. I spent nights standing up unable to sleep because it hurt less to stand than to lay down due to the constant pain I my back. However, I could feel that I was progressively losing function below my waist. It became increasingly difficult to urinate and I eventually lost the ability to do it voluntarily. By the time the doctors found what was wrong, I had lost all feeling and function below the waist.  I had a condition called Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM).  It is a rare, abnormal tangle of blood vessels on, in or near the spinal cord. Without treatment, spinal AVM can permanently damage the spinal cord. While they were able to catch it and fix the condition, it may have been too late.

On March 15th, the surgeons did a procedure to repair the arteries.  However, after the procedure I was still unable to feel my legs among other complications.

On March 25th, I was transferred to the Roger C Peace Rehabilitation Hospital (a rehabilitation center located in Greenville, SC) for physical and occupational therapies. The therapies will last about four weeks.

I have never been one to ask for charity, unless it was absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, in this case, it is absolutely necessary. I have no insurance, and the cost of not only the medical bills from the hospital time, procedures, tests, ambulance rides, will be more than I can realistically afford without as much help as I can get.

I was less than a week from starting an amazing job and beginning the prime of my life, but life seemed to have other plans for me. I will not let this get me down. This is merely a speedbump and I will overcome it.

I have hope that I will walk again and regain at least some feeling or function below the waist, but as of right now, I remain paralyzed. I will continue working hard!  I will never give up!
