Hello,
I'm currently a third year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) as an Applied Mathematics major. The stress I have experienced due to the rigorous academics here haven't lit a candle to the financial burden my tuition bills have weighed on me. After each year I'd be afraid that I'd be unable to afford the following semester. There was always something: the Perkins Loan bill of 2015, tuition being raised, my parents' inability to help me out financially, work - study being assigned too late in the semester, not being paid on time by HR, and so on.
I've experienced more holds on my student account in the past that I care to count these days. This semester, federal grants and private scholarships didn't stretch far enough. My Perkin's Loan award was cut in half, because of its discontinuation in September 2017. On top of that, the Financial Office at RPI waited until two weeks ago to process all of my papers; and lost the first Verification Worksheet I sent in July.
My new standing balance to pay was due a few days after it was processed. I simply did not have the time needed to gather enough funds. I missed the regular deadline for spring registration. Unless I pay my tuition, I won't be able to come back in January.
I've invested in this school through the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Executive Board through being their Pre-College Initiative Chair. Every week I presented to local High School students, in hope of gearing them in the multifaceted STEM fields. Those students are counting on me to come back as well. I owe the community of Troy my services as a student who was able to get a quality education.
But can I finish it?
Education is a privilege in this country that my family and myself can no longer afford. In order to register for classes this Spring Semester, I have to dish well over $1,500 dollars. I would greatly appreciate it if you could make even the smallest contribution.
