Hi everyone!
My name's Jojo, and I'm a 29-year-old transgender woman from Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. I've been on hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, for the past three years, and have reached the next (and potentially final) stage in my gender transition. Gender dysphoria is something that I've struggled with for my entire life, and my face and bone structure in particular has been a constant source of agony and anxiety, which is why I have made the decision to pursue facial feminisation with a local surgeon in January 2026. Looking in the mirror every day and seeing how male puberty warped my facial features so drastically has been unbearable at times, but I truly feel that after this surgery I will finally be able to see "Jojo."
My surgeon has also identified problems with my nose, including a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates that have caused chronic nasal congestion and an inability to breathe through my nose for decades. This would be a truly life-changing surgery in more ways than one.
Unfortunately, despite working as a classroom teacher and saving a significant amount of money (including accessing my entire superannuation decades before I will "need" it, losing 25% to tax) there is still a considerable cost that I am seeking support for. I feel so lucky to even have the option of FFS available to me, especially in my own country where medical practices are some of the safest in the world. Travelling to another country would come with additional costs and risks that I unfortunately cannot afford, especially in 2025. I am fortunate to have never been hospitalised, and this will be my first every surgery, so I'm sure you understand how nervous I am!
Any money raised will go towards:
- My doctor's fees
- Anaesthesiologist fees
- Recovery post-operation - the Department of Education does not provide gender affirmation leave at present, and I would potentially be unable to work for 6+ weeks which may even jeopardise my ability to maintain a contract post-surgery
- Medication, bandages, dressings, balms etc. that are required for post-operative care
- If I somehow raise more money than needed, I will utilise these excess funds to support other transgender surgeries on GoFundMe
I have felt so incredibly lucky to have my family, friends, and the wider queer/trans community support me throughout this journey - if you are able to donate, that means the absolute world to me, but even sharing this post would mean just as much.
