JoJo Campbell Accessibility Fund

As we enter 2024, we are stepping out in faith by asking our community, friends, and family to consider a financial gift for our bonus granddaughter. The Jojo Campbell Accessibility Fund will help offset the expenses of a wheelchair-accessible van and home modifications.

Our daughter, McKena, and her husband, Austin, have three children. A son and daughter are Austin’s from a previous relationship. His 8-year-old daughter, Jojo, has Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (UCMD), and she is confined to a power wheelchair. This genetic condition deteriorates the muscles over time and JoJo has lost the ability to walk since she was 5 years old. UCMD also affects the joints of the hands and feet, bendiness, hyperlaxity and contractures in the hips/joints. Over time, respiratory muscle weakness occurs and stiffness or curvature of the spine.

Despite her condition, she is vibrant, resilient, and has the same desires as any other young girl. She is in high ability classes in school, loves swimming in the summer, and will be participating in her first beauty pageant this winter. The power wheelchair makes all of her interests possible, even the simple act of socializing is aided by her chair.

However, her chair weighs several hundred pounds, and it’s very difficult for the average person to carry her.

So any necessary transportation required the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van. Without any assistance, these vans are extremely expensive and some financial sacrifices were necessary to complete the purchase. A secondary need is for their deck to be modified for accessibility as they are currently using a temporary ramp to get her into their home.

 

Any amount you can give would be used in offsetting the expenses of their van and modifying their deck to have a ramp.
