On November 22, 2019, one of our Horizon family members, Annie Contreras, was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer.  While this news would rock anyone's world, those who know Annie were not surprised that it took only a few moments for her to catch  her breath, and with that, her fight began.  Annie is the most remarkable example of strength and optimism and she has no intention of letting cancer win! She carries an immense warrior spirit in her petite 5' nothing frame. 

A single mom of 3 amazing kids - Jasmine, Melissa and Michael, she is blessed to be surrounded by their endless love & support.  She is committed to her two daughters finishing college while her son completes his sophomore year of high school.  Her family and her Horizon work family are offering assistance, encouragement and positive healing energy each day.  There are so many ways we can aid her in this fight and together we are TEAM ANNIE and willing to do everything it takes!  

Annie began aggressive treatment 4 weeks ago which includes daily radiation to shrink the tumor as well as weekly 8-hour chemotherapy sessions.  Because she is also anemic, she has been in and out of the hospital for the past 3 weeks and has had to undergo 3 blood transfusions.  All of this is taking a toll on her body physically but has not impacted her positive mindset.  She will know in a few weeks how the radiation is working and if the doctors will try a different or even more intense treatment plan. 

She is currently unable to work as she undergoes treatment and her savings are being depleted.  Horizon Cares is raising much needed funds to assist Annie with her most immediate needs which include rides to and from her treatments each day, groceries and daily living needs for her and her family, and out of pocket medical expenses that insurance does not cover.  Annie needs her full focus to be on recovery and a complete return to full health.  All of us that have been touched by her spirit know that she radiates joy, grace and grit each and every day.  She is in the fight of her life and she will overcome.
