Support Victor's Eagle Project to save Hemlock Trees
Donation protected
Hi, I am Victor White, and I am a member of BSA Troop 380 and am working on my Eagle Scout project. I live in the Pittsburgh area. The goal of my project is to eliminate Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) in my community. HWA is an invasive species that kills Eastern Hemlock trees. I am working with the Fox Chapel Parks Commission to help them start a treatment plan for HWA. First, I did a survey of the Fox Chapel parks and found over 600 hemlocks and almost all infected with HWA. Now, to help my community control the spread of HWA, I am going to purchase a few colonies of St Beetles, a natural predator to HWA. The beetles are USDA approved, do not cause harm to any native plants, trees, or animals, and have been used in other parts of the United States to control HWA, including several national parks. The beetles are very expensive initially (about $300/colony which treats 1-2 trees), but cheaper in the long term because they will reproduce and spread to other infected trees and create a symbiotic relationship with the HWA and keep it in check. Any donations will go toward the purchase of these colonies and will be much appreciated. To learn more about why HWA is a threat, and different treatment methods available, read about it on my webpage: https://eagle-project-website.web.app/.
