by providing the necessary tools and support to help them reach their objectives,

while also building a lasting connection between contributor and beneficiary.

We have personally invested our time and resources to provide support to this rural Cambodian school and its teachers and students.

In the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia was left without infrastructure, a functioning government, or schools. In the warped ideology of that regime, education represented elitism and was viewed as dangerous, leading teachers specifically to be targeted for death. To this day, Cambodia is still healing and continues to make economic strides and rebuild its infrastructure, embracing its unique and beautiful cultural voice and expression.

While visiting Siem Reap, Cambodia (home to the legendary Angkor Wat), we had the opportunity to spend time in local villages and speak with residents. That’s where we found a need that aligned perfectly with our lifelong work for youth advocacy.

We got directly involved with a rural village primary school. When we visited, we brought backpacks filled with supplies: notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, rulers, erasers, and snacks. We also brought sports and art supplies, books for classroom libraries, and supplemental materials for teaching.

The need was clear. The enthusiasm from the students was incredible. Time and time again, young adults shared their own stories of growing up and walking 10 miles to school each day, or celebrating if they found a plastic shopping bag on the side of the road - just to carry their school supplies.

The school serves grades K–6 with 73 students and 3 teachers. It’s a concrete, 3-room building on stilts, located 3 hours from Siem Reap in a village with limited electricity and no running water. Teachers earn ~$250/month and often supply drinking water and classroom needs out of their own pockets. The area floods in the rainy season, and many children must arrive by boat.

Uniforms are worn in various states of repair—some students wear only part of a uniform, others none at all. Many lack proper shoes. Some walk great distances to school, and once they graduate to secondary school, the journey grows even longer—the closest is a 30-minute drive by van.

Our experiences only scratch the surface of the challenges these children face in accessing education. But it is clear that even small support can make a significant impact.
