Meet the Glass Family!

In 2022, Ed and Kerri Glass purchased what they thought was their dream home in the suburbs of Washington, DC. The house had been remodeled from top to bottom, and they were excited to start a new chapter with their kids, Tyler and Emilie, while living with Ed’s aging parents. Unfortunately, their excitement turned into a nightmare from which they are struggling to emerge.

Despite passing a full inspection, the home concealed a host of safety issues. The remodeling company that sold them the house had used unlicensed handymen who had not pulled permits and had cut multiple corners, covering their work behind drywall.

These items were done without proper permits and county inspections. This will ultimately cost $300,000 to repair or replace using a licensed Class A Contractor.

• Load-bearing walls were removed, compromising the structural integrity of their home.
• A new gas line was added without proper installation, posing a serious risk.
• A new deck was built, but it is not up to code and is unsafe for use. The county condemned the deck, which the Glasses had to have disassembled and hauled away.
• Brand new bathrooms were created without HVAC systems, preventing proper ventilation and creating moisture in the attic, leading to potential health hazards.
• New plumbing and electrical systems were installed without permits, raising concerns about their safety and reliability. This plumbing leaked through the walls in the basement.
• The existing bathrooms were rearranged without proper permits, causing further structural complications.

This situation has had a dramatic impact on the family's mental health, financial stability due to legal fees and emotional ups and downs over the last three years. Additionally, Tyler delayed going to college in order to take on a full-time job to help contribute.

Since 2022, Ed and Kerri have done their best to fix as much as possible, while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for Tyler and Emilie. Most of their belongings remain in temporary storage and many of the walls and ceilings have been without drywall for the last three years. They have worked hard to make the house habitable for themselves and their kids.

Despite taking on second jobs, the Glasses have incurred $248,000 in additional bank loans and credit card debt to cover these costly repairs and attorney fees. After losing their court case in April 2025, the Glasses no longer have the means to continue the repairs on their home and face the daunting task of ensuring their home is safe for their family. The costs are overwhelming, and they need our help to cover the expenses of hiring licensed professionals to correct the work and obtain the necessary permits, so they are compliant with county construction codes.

How The Funds Will Be Used:
Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly toward paying down the $350,000 debt they have incurred thus far, covering legal fees, as well as toward fixing these remaining items:

• Bringing all electrical, plumbing and vent pipes to code for the whole house
• HVAC for the new bathroom
• Adding fire blocking on the walls to prevent the spreading of fires

Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in helping them restore their home to a safe and livable condition.

We all appreciate your support and generosity during this challenging time.
