Happenstance brought Cathy and Darren together, blending their existing families. Just as their marriage began, Darren experienced a tragic injury at work, leaving him unable to walk. With Cathy's continued care and multiple surgeries, Darren was able to make a near full recovery.

As life was coming together again, Darren became ill with severe abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bile duct and liver cancer stage 4. (Intrahepatic cholangiocarnioma).
