To Sarah’s global village,
On July 23, 2024, Sarah Koch Mohammed, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma in Zanzibar where she lives, works, and is raising her beautiful family.
A few words directly from Sarah:
Having lost my mother to cancer when I was 4 years old, receiving the same diagnosis was my greatest fear. I spent the first four weeks after receiving my diagnosis doing all of the due diligence needed to ensure that I can get the quality care I need in Tanzania, and I can. I also spent those weeks on a deep inner healing journey.
I now see this disease as an opportunity to transform. A rebirth. I can see the infinite effects of this in my life already. I have an incredible support network here. I have been carried every step of the way by my family and close friends. I am deeply cared for.
Hodgkin's Lymphoma is a curable disease. I'll receive treatment every two weeks at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam. I've built a wonderful relationship with the oncologists there and I am in good hands! Overall, the treatment is expected to last six months.
Between medical costs and lost wages, our family has taken a considerable financial hit. We are so grateful for the generous support that is being offered by our close and extended family and community. This experience has illuminated many truths for me, and among the highest of them is that community really is everything. We are meant to hold each other, and I am feeling deeply held.
This fundraiser will help to cover the significant out-of-pocket medical expenses and allow Sarah to focus on making a full recovery.
To those who don’t know Sarah, I’ll try to shed some light. My name is Kate and to call Sarah my best friend wouldn't do our bond justice. She’s a sister and a life partner (thanks for sharing, Lodi!) who I have known since the first day of Peace Corps Tanzania training in 2008.
Sarah is loved the world over (this is not an exaggeration) for her compassion, kindness, and generosity of spirit. Whether you are a friend, colleague, relative, or stranger, when you’re in Sarah’s presence, the sun shines brighter and the birds chirp a little sweeter.
I could write a book on what makes this woman so special (and maybe I will someday), but I want to leave you with one quality that has never wavered, not even once:
Sarah always has your back…no questions asked. No matter what. Now it's our turn to have her back.
Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference.
Funds will support:
- Medical bills for private healthcare in Tanzania (chemotherapy, weekly blood work, routine scans, daily medications, etc)
- Strategic consultations with U.S.-based lymphoma experts
- Biweekly transportation and accommodations from Zanzibar to the treatment center in Dar es Salaam (a short flight across the Indian Ocean)
- Holistic care (nutritious foods, supplements, acupuncture, counseling, etc)
- Administrative: clinical coordination, logistical support, supply chain, etc (navigating cancer in a developing country is a full-time job!)
Let’s come together for our brilliant, beautiful Sarah Koch Mohammed in her time of need and return the love she has always selflessly bestowed on us.
Note: Because GoFundMe does not support fundraising in Tanzania where Sarah lives, I will be responsible for transferring 100% of the funds raised directly to her.
Sincerely,
