My name is Kristen Egbert and I am helping to raise funds for my kids' stepmom, Nicole Curtis. As most know, Nicole and I have always gotten along and we call her the bonus mom. She has been such a blessing and wonderful person in mine and my kids' lives.
Recently, Nicole was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer, Adamantinoma. There is not a whole lot that is known about this particular cancer due to its rarity. Nicole has a long process she will go through to get back to full health. Thank you so much to everyone that has donated so far.
Nicole is having surgery on December 9th. The surgery will take about 20 hours. Here is the itinerary and timeline:
1. Taking fibula from right leg and will place inside cadaver tibia (think of hot dog bun). This will take microsurgery underneath a microscope to reconnect blood supply.
2. Taking at least 16cm of bone out that has cancer in left tibia. Which is most of the tibia bone. Could be more. Will do pathology during surgery to ensure clean margins.
3. 2-3 skin grafts from hips/back. If lucky, only 1-2. Healing 7-10 days. Grafts will have wound vacs after.
4. They will take a calf muscle and use that as the muscle they will be taking out that is on top of the tibia.
5. Be in hospital 1-2 weeks post-surgery.
6. No weight on leg for at least 1-1.5 year.
7. Blood transfusion during surgery and 1-2 days after
8. Wheelchair bound for 1 - 3 months.
9. Motorized scooter when allowed to put leg down, but it will be at least 3 months before able to lower leg less than 90 degree due to saving the blood veins. If the leg is down blood will pool and must have it drained and can cause the vessels to fail.
