Hi there! Thank you for supporting Mr. Smith's Homecoming Fund.
We’ve had the privilege of working with Mr. Roy Smith through the NYU Parole Advocacy Project, and we're thrilled to share that he will be released on March 20!
Mr. Smith is an incredible person who, despite the struggles he’s faced, remains positive and kind. He grew up in Barbados before moving to the New York area, where he met his wife and started a family. He is a father to three beautiful children and continues to be very close to his family, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Now that he is returning home after twenty years of incarceration, Mr. Smith is excited to begin a new chapter. He dreams of learning computer science to pursue a career in programming, volunteering to work with young folks that have had contact with the carceral system, and generally sharing the wisdom he gained through many years of self-reflection with others. Although his children are all adults now, he is eager to reunite with them and is excited to have them visit him and his extended family in Barbados.
Like many people returning from prison, Mr. Smith will need support as he gets back on his feet. Mr. Smith’s circumstances, however, are particularly difficult. Due to a deportation order against him, Mr. Smith will be deported to Barbados post-release. His family in the U.S. plans to help him during his time between incarceration and immigration custody, and his family in Barbados is committed to helping him get back on his feet back home, but post-release can be demanding and expensive, and we anticipate that his family will need more financial support throughout the reintegration process. Any amount you can give — even $5 — will make a meaningful difference to provide Mr. Smith with stability as he begins this next chapter.
We’d be honored if you joined us in welcoming Mr. Smith home by donating. Please also consider sharing this with friends and family to help us reach our goal.
Thank you so much for your support.
Warmly,
Sherell, Fernanda, and Alice
