On August 11th, 2024, Megan passed out in her sister’s kitchen. She was supposed to be on aunty duty the next day for her nephew’s birthday party, but instead, she was rushed to the emergency room.
She’d been experiencing heavy vaginal bleeding for a couple of months from what she thought was a fibroid tumor, but it seemed like she was doing okay, even improving. Nope. Her hemoglobin was at 5.1g/dL. Apparently, your organs shut down at 4g. Yikes. Several tests and a biopsy later, she got the news—the doctors had found a 7.5 cm cancer on her cervix. Double yikes.
She was soon enrolled with the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, but it was almost six weeks before her first appointment. Not surprisingly, she got started with a slew of complementary and alternative therapies. Folks who know Megan know that she is a trained herbalist, so of course, she’s meeting cancer head-on with a basket full o’ herbal goodies.*
While she waited to see the doctor, her family nursed her back to health (with the aid of her awesome superhero broth and lots of herbs and supplements!). She rallied to get some IV iron supplements while she waited for imaging results.
The first imaging results were encouraging – her cancer was a full 3cm smaller than when it was measured at the biopsy. Unfortunately, it was still not small enough to make her a candidate for surgery. Before she knew it, radiation was ordered and set up.
As she sat with the thought of pushing forward into conventions that don’t align with her values, panic set in. She just wasn’t ready to jump into a treatment that would have such life-changing consequences without trying her hardest to avert it.
Given the positive response thus far, Megan has made the calculated decision to give her body a bit more time with the herbal regimens. She’s hoping that by her next MRI (coming up next week) she’ll continue to show more regression.
Regardless of which path she ultimately ends up taking, she’ll be continuing herbs, vitamins, and acupuncture throughout the healing process.
It’s a shame that MediCal (no insurance companies for that matter) will not pay for any kind of treatment outside of the protocols sanctioned by the Western allopathic medical model. This being the case, Megan has had to pay out of pocket for all of her holistic protocols to date. This has resulted in substantial debt that will only continue to grow moving forward into further treatment. Additionally, she has been unable to work, requiring her to temporarily shutter her small business.*
This is where we, her dear friends, family, and fellow earth travelers come in. Please consider making a generous gift to help Megan meet and overcome these challenging circumstances. Funds will go directly to paying for nutritional consultations, vitamins, acupuncture, and body work for the duration of her cancer treatment with her medical team and into her time of recovery.
Any amount will help, but wouldn’t it be cool for us to breeze by her fundraising goal and blow her mind with the abundance and big-heartedness of the people in her life. As they say, many hands…
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful and generous giving. Check back on this page for updates on her healing progress, as well as the progress of the campaign.
ALSO, words of support are highly encouraged and can be left at the final step of the donation process. Your words of love and encouragement are a healing balm. Thanks!
ALSO also, please share this campaign far and wide to help spread the word!
*A single mom of two, Megan owns an apothecary and herbal consultation business in her hometown of Sacramento, CA. Unfortunately, Goody Twoshoes Herbs and Wellness is on hiatus until Megan regains her health. But she says, “I can’t wait to get back to doing what I love: scrambling round the woods and concocting delicious things in my underground workshop! Now more than ever I’m feeling called to delve even further into supportive care for long-term disease and debility, so keep a lookout for that!”
