Lucy is one of those rare, remarkable individuals who makes the world a more beautiful place. Lucy is a talented hairstylist with 40 years of experience in Hillsborough, NJ where she has lived her entire life and raised an amazing son. Lucy has also taken care of others including her mother, aunt & uncle in their time of need. Lucy has been diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma and will have surgery to remove the lining around one of her lungs, which will require a long healing process and then chemotherapy.

We are raising funds for Lucy because she is self-supporting and unable to work during her treatment. The medical bills are expected to be high and any financial help we can raise for her will be greatly appreciated. Many of us have worked with Lucy for most of her long career. We are her work family and will support her however we can. Lucy’s wish is not for financial help but for prayers. So by sharing this publicly, we hope to increase the number of people who can send love, prayers & healing thoughts her way. Lucy would also like to raise awareness for this type of cancer and its known causes.

You may have heard of Mesothelioma in TV advertisements and such, but we wanted to share more about this devastating cancer. Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects organs that have a mesothelial lining. The areas of the body that may be affected are the pleura (lung), pericardium (heart), peritoneum (abdomen), and testicles. In Lucy’s case, she has been diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. The only known cause of this cancer is asbestos exposure. Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked or lived in places where they inhaled or swallowed asbestos. Johns Manville is a local company that manufactured asbestos products for over 160 years and was the world's largest asbestos manufacturer until it filed for bankruptcy in 1982. The company's asbestos products exposed millions of workers to asbestos, which led to thousands of cases of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. After being exposed to asbestos, it can take up to 50 years for malignant mesothelioma to form.

Personal hygiene products and makeup, including children’s makeup, may contain asbestos-contaminated talc. The two mineral deposits often develop near each other, leading to asbestos contamination in the talc. For many years stylists used talc to brush on the back of the neck after a short haircut. While talc has been banned from use in cosmetic products, it hasn’t been for that long. You may still have products in your home that contain talc.

While mesothelioma is rare even in people who have been exposed to asbestos, it’s important to know the symptoms and talk to your doctor if you think you’ve been exposed.

Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs, causes signs and symptoms that may include:

Chest pain
Painful coughing
Shortness of breath
Pain under the ribcage
Unusual lumps of tissue under the skin on your chest
Unexplained weight loss

Peritoneal mesothelioma, which occurs in tissue in the abdomen, causes signs and symptoms that may include:

Abdominal pain
Abdominal swelling
Nausea
Unexplained weight loss

Thank you in advance for any prayers, and emotional or financial support you can send to help Lucy.
