We are raising money for Lewis and Teresa Totten as they’ve had their whole lives change from medical malpractice. Lewis went to the urgent care for a cough. While he was there, he had low O2 and blood pressure. The nurses began administering a medicated nebulizer treatment and left him alone in the room. Lewis passed out, causing him to fall and break his neck, and he was left alone unconscious in the room until they found him and he was brought to the hospital.
Lewis endured surgery, and the doctors have stated that he is now a quadriplegic. Lewis has been unable to move his legs. He has very limited movement in his arms. Lewis cannot walk, he cannot feed himself, or care for his own basic needs, and he is going to need equipment, devices, mobility tools, and many other resources to help him transition into a life back at home that looks very different from before. No one is certain what this will look like for them, but we know that it will be HARD.
As you would imagine, between surgery, a lengthy hospital stay, and now being at in-patient rehabilitation, Lewis and Teresa are facing very large amounts of hospital bills and expenses. Neither Lewis nor Teresa (as his primary caregiver) have been able to work, and it’s not foreseen as to when that will be a possibility again. Teresa has been told she will need to begin buying all of the things that Lewis would need at home as he cannot walk or ambulate alone. Some of those things include lift equipment, a new van that has lifts and ramps for a wheelchair, hygiene equipment, and so much more. We know that the cost of these things is very high. We are seeking as much possible help financially for them as they learn how to manage a quadriplegic lifestyle for Lewis. We’re also hoping to be able to meet Teresa in her inability to work with their mortgage payments, vehicle expenses, and medical expenses as they will continue to build quickly.
If you know Lewis and Teresa Totten, you know the love they have for others. They have always given selflessly and have met so many in the midst of their turmoil. They are grandparents, parents, friends and dear family. For those of you who cannot contribute financially, please pray for healing and for grace as they continue in this heartbreaking journey. Please share their story with others and let’s join to help them together.
