Sam recently found out he was born with a rare genetic mutation called Gata2 deficiency that prevents his body from producing cancer-fighting cells. The genetic mutation is a newer discovery in the medical world, being discovered for the first time in patients in 2011. There are fewer than 500 known cases worldwide. The doctors say that 75% of patients with this genetic mutation develop a blood cancer at some point in their life.

Sam was diagnosed on Aug 11, 2025, with Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML-1). His treatment plan requires receiving a bone marrow transplant in November, which will essentially give him a new immune system, with the hope that the donor bone marrow will allow his immune system to produce the needed cancer-fighting cells to fight off the cancer. He will be hospitalized for 3-6 weeks following the transplant, then recover at home for the following 2-3 months, as well as many doctor appointments for the next 5 years to ensure the transplant is successful.

On November 12, Sam will go to the hospital for his chemo treatments. Then he will begin the transplant on November 19.

As his friends and family, we are rallying to help and asking everyone to join us through this season. There's so much you can do!

To start, please consider donating any amount. How amazing would it be if hundreds of friends and family who have known and loved Sam and Cari through the years were a part of this moment of support?

Next, we will offer a few additional ways to help, including a meal train, filling Santa's bag for Christmas morning, and doing some chores and errands. We invite you to contribute with whatever feels right for you.

Please share this page and come back often to stay updated and connected through this journey. And drop a note here to help Sam and Cari feel the love!

Thank you!
The entire Leatham clan.
