On Monday, October 13, my best friend Oscar Llanos clocked out of work and less than 5 minutes later, suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. (Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in or around the brain ruptures, causing bleeding into the brain tissue. This bleeding can damage brain cells and lead to neurological deficits.) Despite the remote location where we work, emergency personnel were able to reach him quickly. He made it through the critical phase where life expectancy was unsure. He is now in a live-in physical therapy facility. His right leg and arm have lost all use. He has lost most of his vision in his right eye. And he is suffering from aphasia (Aphasia is a disorder that results from damage (usually from a stroke or traumatic brain injury) to areas of the brain that are responsible for language). His nurse told me that the range of recovery is anywhere from never being able to live independently again to 100% full recovery. She was careful to be clear with me that full recoveries are very rare. Oscar's belief and faith are high. He believes he is going to make a full recovery and be better than ever. Our families stand with him in that belief. We Are All Praying And Believing For A Miracle.

That being said, our families have done all we can financially, so we are now reaching out for help. There are bills that insurance is not covering as well as his regular month-to-month bills. This is going to be the hardest fight of his life. I want Oscar to focus everything he has mentally and emotionally on beating this. I want his head in the fight and not worried about how he is going to support his family. Please help me support Oscar and his family as he transitions into this new phase of his life. El lunes 13 de octubre, mi mejor amigo, Oscar Llanos, salió del trabajo y, menos de cinco minutos después, sufrió un derrame cerebral hemorrágico. (Un derrame cerebral hemorrágico ocurre cuando se rompe un vaso sanguíneo dentro o alrededor del cerebro, causando sangrado en el tejido cerebral. Este sangrado puede dañar las células cerebrales y provocar déficits neurológicos). A pesar de la lejanía de nuestro lugar de trabajo, el personal de emergencias pudo llegar rápidamente hasta él. Superó la fase crítica en la que su esperanza de vida era incierta. Ahora se encuentra en un centro de fisioterapia residencial. Ha perdido la movilidad de la pierna y el brazo derechos. Ha perdido casi toda la visión del ojo derecho. Y sufre de afasia (la afasia es un trastorno que resulta del daño, generalmente causado por un derrame cerebral o un traumatismo craneoencefálico, a las áreas del cerebro responsables del lenguaje). Su enfermera me dijo que el margen de recuperación va desde no poder volver a vivir de forma independiente hasta la recuperación total. Me aclaró que las recuperaciones totales son muy raras. Oscar tiene una gran fe y una gran esperanza. Él cree que se recuperará por completo y estará mejor que nunca. Nuestras familias comparten esa fe. Todos rezamos y esperamos un milagro.

Dicho esto, nuestras familias han hecho todo lo posible económicamente, por lo que ahora pedimos ayuda. Hay facturas que el seguro no cubre, además de sus gastos mensuales habituales. Esta será la batalla más dura de su vida. Quiero que Oscar concentre todas sus fuerzas, tanto mentales como emocionales, en vencer esta enfermedad. Quiero que se centre en la lucha y no en cómo va a mantener a su familia. Por favor, ayúdenme a apoyar a Oscar y a su familia en esta nueva etapa de su vida.
