On September 18, 2023 my dearest & longtime friend since childhood, ReRe Russo Keech's 33 year old son, Nicky Bonelli, suffered a Hemorrhagic stroke. His roommate found him unresponsive and he was taken to Lankanau Hospital where his parents, ReRe and Nick Sr., were told that the stroke was too severe and there was nothing they could do; that his heart and organs would stop within a few hours. After 12 horrific hours with nothing being done to save him, his Guardian Angels took control.
A call from two dear friends set in motion the fight for his life. He was medevaced to Philadelphia's Jefferson Hospital of Neuroscience where a brain stent was immediately put into place. He spent almost 60 days in the critical care neurological ICU. Nicky has Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy which caused further complications but he fought. After he woke up from the coma, he was able to give a thumbs up and snap his fingers. However, while in the hospital, he suffered a second stroke. A bloodclot had likely traveled through a newly discoverd hole in his heart directly to his brain. But still, he fought.
He was eventually transported to Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation where he stayed for six weeks and unfortunately developed pneumonia and was then transferred to Paoli Hospital, where he has been ever since. He has since been diagnosed with pneumonia for a fourth time and all evaluation's and treatment have halted which has been devastating. His family is desperately trying to secure him a space at another rehab center so he can continue with the monumental task of continuing rehabilitation. For five months Nicky has had to endure a tracheostomy and feeding tube which will remain until they dermine if he can chew and swallow. He can not sit up, walk, or speak, but he can slightly mouth words. The first words he mouthed were "I Love You" to his mom, ReRe.
Nicky is kind and gentle and a loyal Phillies & Eagles fanatic. He is a doting uncle to his 2 year old neice. He is a loving and protective older brother to his two younger sisters who are devastated and fearful for his life. His lifelong friends have stood by his side, visiting, sending music, writing cards and letters that his family reads to him through tears of gratitude.
Nicky has a long journey ahead of him that will be arduous and grueling. As he faces the biggest fight of his life, he needs support from family, friends, and his community. The extent of the financial burden that lies ahead is daunting. As a community, we are seeking to lessen that financial burden so that his family can focus on spending time with him, and helping him heal and navigate through this journey which may last a lifetime.
