Our family has encountered an unexpected life-changing event. My brother, Juan Ruiz, suffered a fall off a ladder on August 1 that resulted in a severe spinal cord injury. He immediately underwent a delicate surgery to repair the break; however, nerve damage repair has a low chance of recovery. We are hopeful.

Juan is paralyzed from the waist down. Besides a few other broken bones, he did not damage his brain or suffer other internal injuries. We count our blessings. Those of us who know Juan can barely imagine adjusting to this difficult situation, ever the provider and handyman.

His outlook (and our family's) is positive and focused on recovery. Physical and occupational therapy is ongoing. Although he is covered by insurance and is on FMLA, out-of-pocket expenses and deductibles are adding up fast. Juan will be going home in a few more days and modifying his home to prepare for his new life is also a priority . His goal is to eventually return to work to provide for his family and to be well enough to play with his grandchildren for many years to come. We have set up a GoFundMe to help him do just that.
