If you know Dave, you know that he rarely asks for help, even if he needed it. Recently, it's been made known that Dave was diagnosed with kidney cancer. He says he's fine and that he isn't in need of anything, but I know that even basic cancer treatments can become a hefty price to pay.
Dave has inspired many students, teachers, colleagues, and community members not only with his playing but also with his kind heart that he frequently likes to hide. When he teaches, his sole focus is that the student enjoys learning the instrument, in whatever capacity that is. He shows empathy, patience, and understanding. I've seen students, who are labeled as "troublemakers," be inspired in his class, which trickles into their other classes. He tries to give a gruff, "scary" outer appearance, but he really is just a fluffy teddy bear on the inside. I've only heard great things from colleagues and acquaintances as well.
He shares his talents playing in musical theater pits (Tuacahn, St. George Musical Theater, etc.), does solo classical guitar performances, and even gives free lessons to those he feels would benefit and cannot afford them. He will never acknowledge how good of a musician he actually is, but you can see the influence it has on those around him. He gives everything to his craft and to his students but always downplays what he really does. "The kids do all the work. I just flap my arms." When you really watch what he does, when he thinks no one is looking or noticing, you can see his true character, and it's humbling.
On top of that all he is a family man. His wife, Sarah, is one of the nicest, sweetest people you will meet. If you've ever heard Dave talk about his wife, she is his world. Along with their adorable 3 children. I can only imagine how tough it must be for their little family.
For all that he does for people, I would like to return some of that to him. He has a tough road, and I know he will put up a strong front. I would like to make the road a little easier for him and his family in whatever capacity he needs with these donations
