Seeking Support for Makai Colvin, A 23yo Musician, After 2nd Brain Surgery

Our Daughter's Unexpected Journey
• Our sweet songbird, Makai Colvin, has been pursuing her music career in Los Angeles, working multiple jobs to support herself while recording a studio album & playing live.
On Feb. 3, 2025, Makai’s friends took her to the ER at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, CA, with a debilitating migraine, neck and eye pain, and non-stop nausea.
• After CAT scans and MRI, neurologists diagnosed Makai with a brain tumor.
• Pressure from the tumor created 6th nerve palsy, affecting the left side of her face, loss of control of her tongue and eye, causing migraines, numbness, motion sickness and other serious side effects.

A Second Surgery Is Now Necessary
Makai’s first surgery on Feb. 9, 2025, didn't go as hoped. The tumor was not removed.
• The the biopsies have not identified the cause of the tumor.
Maki is scheduled for left sided retrosigmoid craniotomy brain surgery tomorrow to remove the tumor and alleviate the ongoing symptoms, including double vision, motion sickness, facial numbness, and other 6th nerve palsy side effects.

Makai Is a Gentle Music Maker and Old Soul
• Makai is a kind and loving person. She’s often called an old soul by those who know and love her.
• Since childhood, Makai expresses herself through her music. You can listen to her songs online and see YouTube videos of her playing her gentle music about connecting with nature, life’s questions, and learning to survive social anxiety.
• As the fires spread close to her home and work, our family urged Makai to evacuate, but wanting to help her community she returned to work in Eagle Rock as soon as it reopened.
On Jan. 25, she turned her small acoustic concert at Viper Room into a benefit for neighbors who lost their homes.
A week later, Makai was in the hospital herself, fighting to survive brain surgery.

An Undetermined Recovery Time
• The medical team has let us know that Makai's recovery will be 3-to-6 months from this life-altering condition and possibly longer.
• Her many symptoms impede her daily life. Returning to work and making music is impossible until she recovers.
• She needs full-time care, so her brain can heal and restore control of her eyes and tongue and return her life to normal.
• Makai grew up in Santa Fe, NM, and after college at Cal Arts, now lives in Los Angeles as an aspiring singer/songwriter.
• Her mom, Cathy, has relocated to L.A. to care for her full-time.
• Her close-knit CalArts community have helped keep her spirits up with home-cooked meals and short visits, sometimes even with puppies.
• Her extended Santa Fe family have sent surprise boxes and unwavering support.
• Her own family has helped to cover the bills so far, but expenses continue to balloon.
