My name is Robert Carlson. My wife, Gale Carlson, had emergency surgery in mid-March for a severe blockage in her colon. She was in ICU at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville for 11 days, 9 days on a ventilator, and is now in a rehab center (Northbrook Rehab in Brooksville,Fl.) for the last 45 days. Upon discharge to home, she will need a walk-in shower conversion because she can no longer get into a bathtub shower. I've already bought or was donated a wheelchair, a walker, a cane, and I have had a wheelchair ramp installed on our home. I cannot come up with the funds to pay for the walk-in shower at approximately $10,000 to $14,000 charge. Gale is loved by many people in our community, both in her long time friends and coworkers in the foster care field in Brooksville and Ocala, and her family in New Hampshire. She looks like she is going to be non ambulatory for the foreseeable future. She is 79 years old now and has given her whole life to helping others. She is having mild dementia after the surgery, but is cognitive and aware. She just can't walk at this point and certainly cannot get into a bathtub shower. Upon discharge, she will have visiting nurse help for approximately 30 days at three days a week to teach me how to change her colostomy bag and her adult diapers. I will be taking care of my wife by myself after that; I will not put her in a nursing home, because I promised her I would not do that, and I intend to keep that promise. Any help you can give me to pay for the walk-in shower will be a gift from God for me and her. She is getting a lot of visits and daily phone calls from people who love her, but I have to put them on the phone due to her confusion at this point at how to answer the phone. She has a psych eval scheduled for Wednesday, to find out why she is getting so confused. I dearly hope you can help me to take care of her when I bring her home by helping me to pay for the shower conversion. Thank you and God bless you for your help.
