In rural Somaliland, girls are far less likely than boys to attend school. Families often prioritize sons' education when resources are limited, and girls are expected to take on domestic and caregiving roles early. Many women grew up in a generation where schooling was simply not an option for them at all, not because of any individual choice, but because no infrastructure existed for it, and cultural expectations made it a low priority.
Without literacy, a woman can't read a prescription, follow written health instructions, sign a legal document, or participate in any financial system that requires it. She can't help her children with schoolwork, and in many cases can't advocate for herself or her family when it counts. That gap compounds across generations.
AKHRI Mothers & Daughters Literacy runs programs in these communities that teach reading, writing, and basic numeracy to women and girls who have had no prior schooling. They work with mothers and daughters together, so the gains carry forward.
In May, eight of us are climbing Mount Kenya to raise funds for this work. Last year we climbed Kilimanjaro and raised over $21,000. This year we're back with a bigger team.
Every dollar donated goes directly to AKHRI's programs. We're covering our own gear and travel, so nothing from this campaign goes toward the climb itself.
