Edit: Robert is now at peace. Any further donations are not asked for, but if given, will be used to help with memorial expenses. Thank you so much, to everyone, who aided in this journey. Because of you all, he was at peace
in his last days.
Robert Straus — or “Mr. Straus” to the countless students whose lives he’s touched — is an 80-year-old retired theatre teacher, director, and the heart behind over three decades of student-driven theatre, speech, and UIL in Texas. As the founder of the Fredericksburg ISD Summer Theatre Workshop, Bob spent his life nurturing creativity, confidence, and community in generations of young performers. He taught theatre, speech, and English at times for decades, and even in retirement, continued to assist with scholarship applications with PCAA, and continued to direct the annual summer workshop he founded in Fredericksburg. His passion never waned — he continued the workshop every summer from 2002 until 2023
But now, the spotlight has shifted. Robert is in the biggest battle of his life.
In late 2024, he was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his lymph node. At first, the plan was surgery. But radiation treatments intended to shrink the tumor before surgery took a massive toll on his health. He grew weaker by the day, experiencing multiple falls. One fall fractured a vertebrae in his back, and others left his spine misaligned. As a result, he missed his surgery window, and the tumor became inoperable. The cancer has since metastasized.
Bob is now undergoing physical therapy at Wisteria Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Abilene, working hard to regain the strength necessary for immunotherapy, his only remaining treatment option. He’s chosen not to undergo chemotherapy – he’s decided to pursue a path that prioritizes quality of life and dignity.
But this journey has come at a steep cost — physically, emotionally, and financially.
Between medical bills, rehabilitation, missed work for family members, and the uncertainty of what lies ahead, our family is facing mounting expenses. We’re reaching out to our community — those who know and love Bob, and those who simply believe in supporting someone who gave his entire career to lifting others up.
Every dollar donated goes directly toward:
Ongoing medical and rehabilitation expenses (including homecare)
Immunotherapy and supportive treatments not fully covered by insurance
Ensuring Bob can continue this fight with comfort, dignity, and hope
Necessities like groceries, medical supplies that insurance or home care doesn't cover, etc.
If you’ve ever been moved by a play, inspired by a teacher, or touched by someone who gave their heart to others, or better yet, you know the legend that is Bob Straus — please consider donating or sharing this campaign.
Thank you for being part of Bob’s story.
Much Love,
Caleb (his son)
