Greetings,
My family has been going through a tough time; in fact, we've been going through tough times for a while now.
Earlier this month, my older brother, Mikey, took a hard fall and has suffered multiple skull fractures, persistent brain bleeds, and continued complications from his prior disabilities.
For those that don't know my family well, Mikey has had a very difficult adult life and has spent the majority of it disabled. In 2017, he was diagnosed with Pilomyxoid Astrocytoma, a rare form of brain cancer that is typically only seen in children. After numerous brain surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer has been in remission but has had severe consequences on his quality of life and well-being. Mikey has severe epilepsy, is visually impaired, and has difficulty with motor control.
Despite his circumstances, he has held on and stood resilient with his overall condition; He is mentally the toughest person I've ever known.
However, with this latest fall, Mikey was hospitalized in the ICU as of May 5th. His initial prognosis was very poor, but thanks to several procedures and the amazing medical team at Holmes Regional, my brother is alive, stable, conscious, and is now on the long road to recovery. It will take many months, and possibly even years before he is back to what WAS his normal.
This entire situation has left my family mentally, physically, spiritually, and financially drained. My parents by far have been carrying the heaviest load, and have visited Mikey in the hospital every day since his fall. They spend every free hour they have in the day with him. As for myself, I have been driving across the state multiple days a week to visit and actually just got a part-time job in the area just so I can be closer to my family and help in whatever way I can.
My mother is a kindergarten teacher for Brevard Schools, and my father is semi-retired and runs a small business. The numerous procedures, extended stay in the ICU, compounded with the reality that my mother is also currently undergoing cancer treatment, have accumulated a significant amount of medical bills that my family will simply not be able to pay at our income level.
I didn't think I would ever be in this position to have to ask for the kindness of my friends, peers, and people on the internet for financial support, but we live in truly turbulent times.
We would be incredibly grateful for whatever assistance you can provide; every donation is exceedingly helpful and important.
In addition, to all of those who have reached out and have shown kindness and support to my family and I for the past month, I couldn't thank y'all enough. God bless.
Sincerely,
-Matthew and the Scira family
