I’m reaching out with a humble request for support during one of the most challenging times of my family’s life aside from going through the tragic deaths of my brother and sister. My sister was also an organ donor and we were able to save several other lives with her passing.
My dad, Ken Ellzey (aka Bop), was diagnosed with advanced heart failure years ago. After fighting off cancer, going through double bypass surgery, and dealing with several other illnesses and surgeries, the Vanderbilt doctors confirmed that a heart transplant was his only chance for survival. Dad had the heart transplant this past Friday (9/12). He hadn’t been on the list long. He was added to the list with the most critical cases with only 1 remaining artery that was partially blocked. We are so blessed that they found a match so quickly and I know this heart will never be taken for granted.
In turn, the financial burden is already overwhelming. Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket costs are staggering. These include:
• Hospital and surgical expenses not fully covered
• Lifelong immunosuppressant medications
• Frequent travel to and from Vanderbilt for appointments
• Temporary housing for my mom and myself near the hospital during recovery (he has to remain in Vanderbilt, along with my mom as his full time caregiver for ~5-6 weeks)
My family and I are doing everything we can, but we cannot do this alone. Your donations will go directly toward easing these financial burdens so we can focus on healing and recovery.
Every dollar makes a difference, and even if you can’t give, sharing this campaign with others would mean the world.
