The past month has been tough on the Helm crew. Just before Christmas, Herbie sustained what we thought was a mild neck/head injury that a few days of rest would remedy. But six weeks later, while some concussive symptoms have lifted, other significant neurological symptoms have not yet improved.
Herbie, the most enthusiastic Aquatics Director around, is unable to work at this time, and we don’t know exactly what the future will look like. He will be working with a great team of specialists in Grand Rapids to address motor planning, executive function, and other neurological concerns associated with traumatic brain injuries.
Herbie is facing the current situation with his typical positive and carefree spirit. But it hasn’t been easy on him, or on those of us who love him. In addition to the stress of the injury itself, the realities of high out-of-network medical costs, travel expenses, and the growing pile of bills is taking its toll.
And so, while we know everyone is stretched thin right now, we’re reaching out to our community for support. We will keep this page updated as we receive new information and as Herbie makes progress.
Thank you to everyone aware of the situation who has reached out to Herbie and our family. We feel the love already. Herbie has shared that it can be challenging for him to process calls and messages, so I will be sure to update this page regularly and, of course, you are welcome to reach out to our family. ❤️
