Hello – My name is Lauren Miegel. As you may or may not know, Sarah Mix was recently diagnosed with a rare form of soft-tissue cancer currently characterized as a type of Epithelioid Sarcoma. Sarah found a seemingly innocuous bump near her pelvis and had it removed not suspecting anything serious. After removing the mass and subsequent pathology reviews of the tumor at Cleveland Clinic, MD Anderson, and an ongoing analysis of the samples at Mayo Clinic, the diagnosis today is substantial and life changing.
This type of soft tissue sarcoma is very rare and very aggressive. Sarah is tremendously lucky on a few fronts. Sarah found the localized mass early, had it removed in Dallas and has been diligent in her desire to identify and treat what was discovered. As such, she is now in the care of soft-tissue sarcoma specialists at MD Anderson in Houston where she is about to undergo more than 30 in-person treatments of radiation, surgery, and imaging. Possibly followed by more radiation and surgery. The initial surgery did not get all the cancerous cells.
As of today, the cancer has not metastasized to any of the lymph nodes or any other parts of the body and the cancer is local to its point of origin.
Sarah’s prognosis today is positive, and this is not a message of despair. But as anyone who has battled cancer knows; it takes a village of supporters, it takes a diligent and competent medical team, and it takes time. Beating an aggressive cancer like this doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen alone. Beating cancer is a team effort.
We are looking to create that initial support system of family, friends and colleagues. Sarah will have significant travel, lodging, and possibly occupational or lifestyle expenses as a part of these 25+ in-person visits to MD Anderson in Houston. Our goal here is to alleviate the financial burden, as much as possible, of this cancer diagnosis and provide Sarah with the financial resources she needs to fight this head-on in Houston. Which as many of you know, is five hours from her home in Little Elm, TX.
We will provide updates here as they become available and please feel free to share messages of support here but also with Sarah directly. While this has been very scary and challenging news, Sarah would love any individual or private messages. She will have plenty of time in Houston to chat with old friends and maybe make a few new ones.
On behalf of Sarah, her boys, and her entire family, thank you so much for your support and we are very much looking forward to many positive updates in the future.
