Hi! The sweetest puppy in the world- my 8-month-old Chihuahua, Pluto -was recently diagnosed with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCP).
"Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease typically shows up in small dog breeds, striking when dogs are just months old. It occurs when the ball at the top of the femur loses its blood supply and breaks down inside the hip joint." - Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine
The breaking down of his left hip has caused the dislocation and fracture of his femur. The best course of action long-term is to perform a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO).
During surgery, a veterinarian removes the femoral head, leaving the hip socket empty. The dog's leg muscles initially hold the femur in place, and over time a "false joint" forms as scar tissue develops between the femur and the hip socket. He'll be able to make a full recovery with the right support!
The price of his initial appointments, sedation for X-rays, surgical consultation, blood drawing, and surgery is an astronomical number to me. Everything is estimated to cost between $11,000-$12,500 before factoring in aftercare costs like physical therapy. Pluto is my best friend and favorite thing in this whole world so booking the surgery first and figuring out finances second was a no-brainer. However, this has become a much bigger financial burden than I could've expected. I am asking any dog lovers to chip in anything at all to help Pluto's health journey or even just share it around. He is getting the best care in NYC and I remain positive that he will be okay. Thank you so much!
