In December, Kasey Gossom will celebrate her 26th birthday. While her parents would normally be in search for the "perfect gift "; they are instead, in search for strength, hope, faith & a miracle for their daughter.
In March 2016, Kasey was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (a blood cancer that starts in the lymphatic system). Kasey’s diagnosis is a heart-wrenching reality that is still being absorbed as so is the added financial burden of costly medical care associated with the treatment of the disease.
In March, Kasey started her long 6 month journey of grueling chemotherapy to put the cancer into remission. Along the way, Kasey suffered probably every side effect that the chemo could dampen upon her physically and emotionally. The last chemo treatment was done in August. It was Kasey’s time to ring the CANCER BELL. The bells chimed into the tune of completion, courage, strength, faith and prayer that the 6 months of chemo would be a success.
In September, a pet scan was performed to check if Kasey was rid of the cancer. Bad news……Kasey was not in remission. It is vital that Kasey starts a new course of treatment which includes aggressive chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant.
Kasey’s upcoming birthday in December is another year blessed for Kasey and our family. However; it means that she will no longer be eligible under her parents’ health insurance. Her medical needs will not be met. In the past few weeks, Kasey and her parents have been through a whirlwind of financial hurdles; filling out financial application forms, denials of insurances, medical costs, traveling expenses, and the list goes on.
This month of November is a time for being grateful! We are a family that is blessed with a bond of loving devotion, support and strength. Our family has triumphed cancer before and we have faith that we will do it again.
