In 2021, our friend Nikki Nickerson was diagnosed with Stage 0 breast cancer. After five grueling surgeries—made even more difficult by her allergy to all opioid pain medications—Nikki beat cancer through sheer willpower, strength, and resilience. She chose to embrace a new chapter, gave away almost everything she had in the U.S., and moved to Belize to live a gratitude-filled life on her terms. She was joined this year by her elderly mother, and continues to be a sweet mama to her son, who attends school in the States.

Earlier this year, life threw a devastating curve-ball: Nikki was diagnosed with a different, more aggressive type of breast cancer.

Despite the challenges of undergoing treatment in a country with limited medical infrastructure, Nikki has been bravely fighting. Many amazing people have stepped in to send supplies that are difficult to get locally, and Nikki has even continued to work remotely when she's able—all while enduring the punishing side effects of chemotherapy. Her smile and the light that she brings to the world have continued to shine in spite of the challenges.

Why We're Raising Funds

Nikki has exhausted her financial resources during the first round of chemo, part of which includes a 6-hour trip to receive treatments every 2 weeks at a discounted rate of close to $300.00 each trip.

The great news is that the cancer started responding immediately after the very first chemo treatment, which surprised even her doctor, and let everyone know she's on the right track to recovery with a good prognosis!

The next phase of her treatment is much more expensive. She’s been prescribed a new chemotherapy regimen that must begin soon in preparation for surgery, which may take place as soon as November 2025.

The cost of this next series of chemo treatments alone exceeds $29,000.

The cost of surgery and travel to Mexico where it will take place is still unknown, but will be very expensive, and the travel without conventional pain management will be taxing. Please lift her up in your thoughts and prayers when this time comes. (The fundraising goal will be adjusted when there we know the cost of surgery and travel. )
